Kathy Van Gough,
one of our favorite professional artists from Canada, has discovered plaster
casting and is having a blast!
Surrounding the fireplace in this room was a blank canvas
that Kathy found exciting! Not only were the walls white and badly in need
of some color, but the fireplace itself, needed some architectural detail.
She cast two of the column tops, let them dry then
attached them to the wall with joint compound. (See designer's tip below).
She then used a 1x6 board as the column center and
attached it with nails to the wall below the Column top.
Plaster stenciling was added horizontally between the
columns to give further detail. She then stenciled our "Venus DeMilo" design
on the fronts of the column centers, then faux finished the entire wall in a
rich earth tone and added a brilliantly colored painting to complete the
picture.

Casting plaster is so easy and so rewarding! And the truly wonderful
part? It's so CHEAP to achieve these highly ornate, completely beautiful
looks.
Designer's tip:
On heavier plaster pieces, it is
sometimes necessary to drill small holes in the recesses of the design,
butter the back with joint compound, hold to the wall and then nail small
finishing nails in to the holes to hold the heavy piece in place until the
joint compound dries. Be sure to use a counter sink to recess the nail heads
(be careful not to hit your piece with your hammer) then fill the holes with
joint compound.
