Each year I try to visit the "Seattle Street of Dreams".
These are very expensive homes where designers are invited to participate in
the show and then the home is up for sale but open to the public to be
viewed for a short period of time.
Ideas abound in these homes as top designers put their
best efforts in to the projects in hopes of being invited back for a future
show.
One elegant bath took my breath away. Not only because of
it's architectural lay out, but also because it was right up my alley
featuring plaster stenciling and cast plaster!
4 years ago, I was the first the designer to create a
line of Raised plaster stencils and introduce the market to this wonderful
revival of an old art on a mass scale. For me, it's exciting to see it
catching on all over the country. Even in the Street of Dreams homes!
The first thing I want to mention about this room is the
use of color. The soft blue/green used as the base on the walls is a common
color that was used in old Victorian homes at the turn of the century. (I've
done my research over the years!) and has not come back in to such favor
until the past few years.
I've always loved this color for it's soothing qualities.
It just makes you melt, relax....
Their use of gold and beige as the accent colors lends to
the elegance of the entire room.
The second photo shows the cast plaster tiles on the
archway ceiling. The designs in these tiles are very old designs that have
been used literally for centuries and were once a staple in Victorian
decorating.
In the bottom photo, take close look at the raised
plaster stenciled vines that trail down from the top of the columns. Just
beautiful!
The raised stenciling was started directly at the top of
the column and allowed to trail down. The column was then simply sponge
painted allowing the paint to puddle in the recesses of the design to give
it more depth.
If you are not aware of it, your local "Lowe's" Home
store now carries lightweight, resin columns that you can install yourself
for a very reasonable cost.
These columns can be used to add to a room's
architectural interest and to the value of your home. You can then plaster
stencil and paint your columns to suit your tastes and decor preferences.
