Decorating with Cast Plaster

Colorful leaves in a stone back splash

This was an awesome idea I saw at the Seattle 2005 "Street of Dreams" that I just couldn't wait to share with you because it was so unique and creative!

What this artist had done was to create leaves from a mold using concrete instead of plaster (now remember, that any of our molds can be used with concrete for interior or exterior use so don't limit yourself!).

What they did was to paint the leaves after they had dried (a good permanent paint such as Liquitex Glossies would do the trick here!) then included those leaves in standard stone work.

But guess what! They did this as a backsplash in a bathroom! Isn't that a cool idea? I just fell in love with it!

How could you do the same? That's easy!

Using painters tape, tape off the area and lines that you wish your design to be (look at the photos... they did both straight lines and creative lines!). This will protect the wall from the thin set you will use to mount your stones and leaves.

Now, spread "thin set" over the wall and press your flat stones and leaves in to them any way you choose. Remember that when laying stone or tile to leave a small gap between each piece for the mortar.

Allow to dry and then mortar in between according to the directions on the package. Clean up any smudges you might get on the wall immediately.

Designer's tip: Your local "Home Depot" or "Lowe's" have FREE classes (about an hour of your time) that will teach you how easy it is to do tiling (which is exactly what this project is). They will also teach you about the products needed then take you directly to the area of the store where those items are carried and answer your questions as you select your materials. They are wonderful! USE THEM!

This technique can be used not only as a backsplash to kitchen, tub or sink, but also on outdoor planters, the fronts of exterior steps or along the edge of a walk way.

I was so impressed with this designer's ingenuity that I have to try it myself!

Leaves aren't the only designs you can place with your stone... try medallions, roses, grapes or any other mold design you fancy!
