With friend husband out of the country for 3 weeks...
guess what I started on the moment he left so I could move all of the
furniture in to the living room? My Cast Plaster Ceiling Frame!!! YES!!!
I've been DYING to do it for quite some time and now was my chance!
No, not that he would disapprove at all, but rather
because that tall, Norwegian style, hansom man wouldn't be in my little bity
Cherokee/Scotch way!
It took me one day to cast all of the plaster I need for
my ceiling frame and just one hour to put it all up! I used our Plaster
Oasis Medallion Mold, Plaster Floral Arch Mold and Plaster Ornate Shell
mold. Only 3 little molds made all this! Now, I could use them for other
things as well!
Now let me tell you that measuring is probably the
MOST IMPORTANT part of your project! Measure and then measure again
because if you get it wrong, you will kick yourself around the block like I
almost did!
I measured alright... I measured from the center of the
Chandelier on one side and from the outside of the round medallion on the
other! Woops! Silly girl!
Fortunately, I realized my mistake BEFORE I had seated
all of my pieces! I had used a pencil to mark out my frame then took a break
and was just sitting there imagining it all put together when I noticed that
one side looked a bit "off".... now, I know we "girls" aren't math whizzes
by nature (at least I'm not!)... but kids, we can use a ruler, a calculator
and we can draw a straight line when we have to....... we just have to stay
focused is all and that's what I "wasn't" doing....
After making my adjustments (red faced but alone to feel
the flush all by myself), I began buttering the back of all those little
medallions I cast with joint compound and set about setting them in to
place. I held the small ones for only 30 seconds (yes, I really did count
under my breath).. and the larger ones for 60 seconds and they stuck like
glue! Awesome!
I waited, then went back with my finger and a bit of
joint compound, went around each piece and filled the gap between the
ceiling and the plaster piece. When you do this, it makes your design look
very professional and as if it's actually been carved right in to the
ceiling. The ceiling and your design become "one". (A marriage made in
plaster heaven!).
Within the next 24 hours, I painted it the color of the
ceiling and stood back in amazement at what I, little ole me, (by
standing on the dining room table in my bare feet of course) accomplished
all by myself! YOU can too!
Four people have now seen this on my ceiling and two of
them literally screamed with delight!!! "Oh my god! Victoria! You REALLY did
this by yourself?".... as I blew the plaster dust off my fingers and wiped
them gently on my shirt, looking down at my hands with a non-shalant look on
my face, I calmly said "Well... sure". All the while inside I was screaming
and jumping up and down saying:
YES!!! It was ME!!! Aren't I wonderful? Isn't it
grand????
What fun I had! And now, I have this gorgeous, ornate
ceiling frame around my chandelier that when I turn the light on and dim it
way down, it lights up only the inside of the frame and casts beautiful
shadows against each piece. How I LOVE it! And it was so easy it's flat
PATHETIC!
