I just got back from spending a week
with Spring Meese, my baby sister, in
her recently purchased home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Filled with architectural interest such as
carved archways and surprising niches, the house has been owned by many
people who all put their multitudes of sloppy coats of paint (even on the
windows!), literally covered windows with walls, and left much to be desired
in the way of true "quality" decorating.
But Spring saw a diamond in the rough and bought it
for herself and her two energetic young sons.
While there, we tackled the main bath, giving it a
coat of butternut squash colored paint, trimming out in white, changing out
hardware on cupboards (Thanks to the handi-work of our Mom Fay, who also is
our technical expert on this site) and hanging her specialty wrought iron accessories.
But her most impressive make-over of this bath was the ugly, typical
medicine cabinet with silver trim. (How many homes have you lived in that
had one of THOSE???)
This cabinet had probably been there since the house
was built in the late 60's and honey, it showed! The metal banding was
loosing it's shine and was dented in places. The mirror had lost some of it's backing, showing
spots of darkness in the corners. What a shoddy, dreadful site!
Spring, being the brilliant young interior decorator
that she is, came up with a wonderful idea: She'd faux finish the metal
banding and add wood ornaments (in the same finish) to the corners with "Alene's
Tacky Glue (a super strong glue that's wonderful for combining two unlike
surfaces in a bond that is ultra strong!).
The result was a fabulous new mirror that sports
carved detail in the corners (purchased from Lowe's Home Store in the wood
department) and is now a blessing rather than "sore spot" in the room. |
