Michelle Mullins
has been a favorite contributor to this site and now she presents us with
her Raised Plaster Tree at the base of her staircase.
Michelle has more stenciling going on in her home than you can imagine
and she always does such a beautiful job.
By tinting her joint compound prior to plastering, she's saved herself
the work of try to hand paint her raised design by hand or by replacing the
stencil over the design.
Tinting is easy and we always recommend pure pigment products to tint
joint compound. Why? because common craft paint or wall paint simply doesn't
add enough pigment to the compound and you must remember that joint compound
dried bright white. Whatever color you add to it you will now find dries
extremely lighter than the color you originally mixed.
We recommend "Universal Tints" which can be found on-line at many
websites. Carefully check prices however. I found some sites selling it for
4.99 a bottle while others were gouging at 9.99 for the same bottle!
Don't let the $4.99 price make you think it's high. You have to remember
it's pure pigment with no fillers (such as a white base). I mean, this is
pure color and goes a LONG way so use it sparingly! But it does the trick
beautifully.
