Decorating with Plaster Stenciling

Placement, Design and Color Provide a Grand

Look to a Fireplace Casing

Suzanne Rende, a sought after professional in the Faux Finish Industry, shows us just how easy it is to take a plain surface and add incredible beauty with raised plaster stenciling and a wash of texture enriching color.

This casing over the top of a client's fireplace was once plain and simple. But Suzanne transformed it in to something exquisite.

Notice that the casing is painted the same color as the ceiling which offsets it from the deeper, richer wall color.

Raised molding over the top of the casing creates natural inset panels in which designs were then added.

The raised molding was painted a coordinating tone to blend it with the wall color.

She applied our Raised Plaster Oxford Oblong Panel Stencil to the side panels and our Raised Plaster Worthington Border Stencil to the top panel.

Once the designs were dry, a color wash inside the panels and over the design gave the entire surface the appearance of further texture.

See more designs done by Suzanne here on our website and do visit her website at http://www.suzannerende.com but plan to stay awhile, you won't want to leave!

Designer's tip:

Color washing is simply done by mixing wall color (or even craft paint color for that matter) to translucent wall glaze that you can buy at your local paint or hardware store.

This mixture is then "washed" over the intended area then wiped of "blotted" off with a dry terry towel to leave the pattern of your choice.
