Decorating with Stencils

Carol Wallace creates a large mural with just a few simple stencils

Carol Wallace has the capability of totally capturing my attention every time she emails me photos of her newest project.

Like me, Carol, I believe has become a stencil "addict"! You will find many pages of her special projects on this website along with great ideas to include in your own home.

Here, Carol developed a mural using just a few stencils, but as you can see, with the use of background colors, she has made the mural expand an entire large wall!

Carol's tree of twisted wood, leafy branches and dangling apples, combined with a gray and white sky of clouds and flying birds gives you the sense that's there more to see within the fog of those soft, muted colors.

Notice the soft sponging of "greens" which give the illusion of "land" against the soft sponged sky.

Carol's tree trunk and large branches appear "hand painted", however, I'm pretty sure the leaves are stenciled.

I think the stenciled rabbit under the tree is a charming touch!

Designers tip:

To create easy "distant" backgrounds when doing a mural, either use a sponge or old towel to create blended "areas" of color.

For instance, muted, soft blues for the sky, then soft browns or greens on the lower half to mimic "land".

By keeping your colors soft, elements that you stencil over the top of that background won't "compete" with it in brilliance or color but rather add to the beauty of the element, making it the focal point
