Decorating with Stencils

The make-over I was dying to do!

Before

By Victoria Larsen

I wish now, that I would have taken photos of this room when every inch of each wall was completely covered with heavy metal posters, glow in the dark alien faces and trivia... where clothes were thrown in the floor and the bed was never made.... but that's the life of a teenager, isn't it?

Once he grew up and moved out on his own, this room was MINE!!! ALL MINE!!! I reveled in the thought, the planning, the cleaning and the destruction of "teenville".

I began by repeating a white raised plaster border on the white walls of "Raised Plaster Victorian Roman Urn". In between each repeat, I placed cast plaster "Oasis Medallions" from our mold design.

I turned the bed angling the corner and used an "up-light" behind a low table I used as it's headboard. A container of silk fern leaves casts shadows on the wall and ceiling as a result.

The window coverings were easy. Simple panel curtains were hung with a draping of cream colored sheers above. I hung a tassel right in the middle for added interest and created my own tie-back by taking a length of heavy braid fringe from the fabric store, adding plastic rings for hooks to latch on to a decorative hook in the wall.

Photos taken from my husband's trip to Egypt and a a new comforter with lush pillows complete the look.

I learned a valuable lesson doing this room because I found that since the walls were deeply textured, it was difficult to see my raised design unless the light was just right. So my recommendation to you is that if your walls are textured, either pre-paint them a slightly different color (deep cream would have been lovely in this room with that detailed white design), or pre-tint your plaster a slightly different color so that your creativity is clearly visible the moment you step in to the room.

This room is now our guest retreat, complete with coffee maker, fluffy robes and slippers in the closet and scented "everything". The problem is, they never want to LEAVE!!!

Designers tip:

Casting and applying ornamental plaster pieces to your walls is as easy as stenciling with plaster!
