Decorating with Stencils

The Enchanted dreams of Carol Wallace

"Drab" is just not a word in Carol Wallace's vocabulary. If there's a dark place, she will give it light. If there is "hum drum" she will make it exciting.

Carol saw the need for something wonderfully "fantasy-like" to create some interest in her stairwell to the basement area. And boy howdy, did she!

The top photo shows how Carol not only created a faux stone wall going down the stairs, but actually hung a REAL window frame on the wall! Carol! Your ideas are just incredible!

As you traverse the stairs, (center photo) you find an interesting mural on the landing (that continues down the staircase) that includes a faux window, hanging flowers (in the stage of drying), a cat walking the wall and a potted palm plant.

At the bottom of the stairs, her mural continues to include a kitten seated by the birdhouse (laying in wait for the birds above no doubt!) and a colorful flower garden.

Again, the background was laid before the mural had actually begun and lends to the depth and realism of the wall. Notice that the background is simply "washing" color to create a "lawn" behind the element designs. It's easy! Just dilute acrylics to the consistency of 2% milk, use an old sponge or towel, swipe the color off, then with an old dry rag of some sort, immediately wipe off the excess to leave just a hint of color.

Designers tip:

Don't expect to complete a total mural in one day. Take it slowly, beginning with the background colors, then add one element at a time, typically starting with the "focal" element such as a tree or architectural design of some sort. Build your mural around that main design, adding other elements such as flowers, fences, potted plants and so on.

Murals can literally be added on to at any time, even years later! So that is why you often see me say "on-going" mural. For me, I'm never done and I've got a sneaking suspicion that Carol will never  be done either! YOU GO GIRL!
