Decorating with Stencils

It's easy and it's awesome!

Carol Wallace dreams, sees things in her head and then executes them on the walls of her home. You can tell she has a fabulous imagination... just check out all she's done for this site!

This type of design is absolutely a cinch to do:

Here's how!

Take a piece of large paper (newspaper, paper bag, etc) and literally tear a hole out of the center as large or small as you would like your "exposed brick" to be.

Place the "negative" portion of your torn paper on the wall where you want the brick to be. Tape it down firmly smoothing out any wrinkles.

Using our Brick stencil according to the directions, stencil over the top of the hole in the paper. Part of your stencil elements will extend beyond the hole onto the paper and that's exactly what you want. You're just concerned about what's being stenciled "inside" the hole. Repeat the bricks as necessary to completely stencil the hole area.

Once you're done, go find the "positive" portion of the paper you tore the hole in........(yup, the one you just threw in the garbage that is now covered with coffee grounds.... that's the one........) now place it over the top of the stenciled bricks and hold in place (matching up exactly with the outside shape of the stenciled hole now filled with bricks and using a gray or brown paint, shade around it just slightly.

Add the cracks by simply taking a liner brush (or any fine haired, skinny artists brush.... or even use a light colored permanent marker in light brown or light gray) and create squiggly "cracks" here and there around your exposed brick. Practice on paper (the one you dug out of the garbage maybe?) until you like the way your cracks look.
that's it! You're done!

Designers tip:

To make super realistic brick, sponge on two colors then lightly flick a tooth brush that has black or deep brown acrylic paint (wipe off excess) over the top of the bricks for flecks of more color. It's fun! (But DO protect floor and surrounding wall!)
