This super simple technique will give you REAL looking raised plaster bricks
and stones! Though there seems to be a lot of steps, each goes very quickly
and is a total kick in the pants to do.
Decide on the basic color of your bricks and choose your colorings based on
that. You will want your compound tint, a dark, medium and light version of
the color in acrylic paints as well plus a bottle of pure white acrylics.
1. Pre-color your joint compound with pure pigment colorings such as stucco
or concrete coloring, food colorings or pure pigment
paints (sorry, acrylics and wall paint don't contain
enough pigment to make a real difference in color).
A great source for inexpensive tinting products can be found in the paints
section at http://www.doitbest.com The
product is called "Tint all"
2. Apply the colored joint compound to the stencil and allow to dry.
3. Using a sponge or large stencil brush, blot dark acrylic paint over your
dried bricks.
4. Again with your sponge or brush, blot a medium color over your bricks and
blend slightly
5. Now sponge or brush a light color over your bricks and blend slightly.
Adding veining:
6. Using a feather (the craft store sells them or find one in the yard), dip
the side hairs in your medium colored acrylic paint then stroke your feather
at an angle across your bricks. Blend slightly with your stencil brush. You
want the veining to be very visible so don't blend too much.
7. Do the above step with pure white acrylics and slightly blend.
The finished product looks like the wonderful stone you see below.
Again, this technique can be used with our stone stencil as well.
Remember when deciding on your colors, to choose a dark, medium and light
version of your desired brick color.
