Decorating with Stencils

Roses Grow where creativity is learned

The Ben Franklin Craft Store in "Bonney Lake", Washington is owned by my dear friend "Adrian Taylor" and has been a favorite of mine for over a decade. I've spent many hours doing classes and demonstrations in this, and his Monroe store over the years and enjoyed every moment of it.

One class at the Bonney Lake Ben Franklin was devoted to a "hands on" lesson of "ad-lib" stenciling. This is where you take one design and turn it in to something much more elaborate!

In this class, we took our Rose Design, painted woody vines in brown streaking across the wall by simply dipping a flat brush in acrylic paints then "twisting" it back and forth as we created the lines on the wall criss-crossing one another, then took only the leaves from the stencil design and added them as we saw fit, finally adding the roses last..........

And turned it in to this! A permanent marker made the scrolling "tendrils" you see in the design and even the "scaredy-cats" did some! Look at how beautiful, life-like and "hand painted" this design came out.

YOU can do things just like this! Give it a try! Afraid to apply it to the wall? Play with the idea you have in mind on paper first and watch something really cool develop! It's easy and it's so rewarding to see what you create using a simple stencil design as your "basics" and letting your imagination do the rest!

Designers tip:

A permanent marker used on the wall? Well sure! It won't wash off, it's super easy to use and just as simple to cover up with wall paint as an entire mural! DO NOT however, use "watercolor" markers. They will run and "feather" the moment you get water on them. So "Permanent" markers only!
