So you're a budding designer and want to try your
hand at cutting your own stencils.... or maybe a professional needing to cut
a design for a client? We have what you need!
Note: we suggest a stencil burner rather than
an exacto knife to sear through the plaster mylar. These are available at your
local craft store.
How to cut your own stencil:
Option #1: Make sure
that your stencil pattern has been traced with a black felt tipped pen (so
that you can see it through the mylar with no problem).
place your pattern under a pane of glass. (an old
window, glass from a picture frame, or table glass).
Place the stencil mylar on top of the glass.
While looking directly over the top of the glass,
follow your trace lines with the tip of a hot stencil burner. Keep your
burner upright rather than on an angle. You must be directly over the top of
the design. If you sit back or off to the side, you will see the lines
through the mylar differently and your design might come out slightly
"skewed".
Option #2: Trace your
design right on to the mylar using a permanent felt marker (such as a
sharpie). If you use anything else, you risk smearing the lines.
Place the mylar on top of glass and cut as
described above.
Stencil burners are sold at most craft or art
stores and cost about $15.00 (a small price to pay for saving you the
frustration of hand cutting with a knife!).
