Use this easy and beautiful technique on walls, cabinets or furnishings to create the look of real carved wood!

Taping off a panel design

Step 1 Create wood background

Step 2 Stencil Grain

Step 3 Blend Grain

Step 4 Grain the sides and top

Step 5 Apply plaster piece over wood grain

Step 6 Paint grain over plaster piece

Step 7 Stain

Creating a faux carved wood surface is actually very easy. Begin by blending light brown and very soft yellow together in uneven vertical stripes on the surface.

I decided to do a faux wood panel to show you how.

I taped off the panel to have a center and 4 sides pieces to mimic a cabinet door or Armoire front.

Step 1. Blend light yellow and pale brown in vertical stripes on the surface (panel inset). Cover the entire panel inset or wall area.

Step 2. Apply any one of our Wood Grain Panel Stencils to the surface and stencil with dark brown acrylic paint. No need to be careful here since abnormalities look awesome!

Step 3. Remove the stencil and immediately use a dry paint brush to slightly blur the stenciled graining. Repeat the stencil by moving it down until the top part of the stencil comes just below the bottom end of the last repeat. Stencil again and blend the lines up in to the previous graining. Repeat over the desired surface until all graining is done.

Step 4  Re-tape corners to a 45 degree angle as necessary. Repeat the above process for the side panels, using any one of our Wood Grain Trim Stencils . Side panels will be done vertically and top and bottom panels will be done horizontally.

Step 5 Cast any one of our Ornamental Mold designs in Plaster of Paris and allow to dry completely. Paint it the same background colors as you did the grained surface. (In this case, light yellow and brown).

Use joint compound to adhere it to the surface of the intended area. Simply follow our easy Ornamental Plaster Instructions. Be sure to fill the gap between the surface and the plaster piece with joint compound and let dry.

Step 6  With a small artists brush and dark brown paint, paint the same grain lines over the top of the cast plaster piece, using the grained background as your guide.

Step 7 Use your favorite color of wood stain and wipe over the grained surface in the same direction as the graining stencil was applied. I chose a dark, rich Mohagany. Wipe off excess.

This method can be used to:

Create the look of hard wood floors over old, ugly linoleum.

Turn painted doors in to beautifully faux carved doors

Turn painted furniture back to wood look.

Create rich wood panel walls in any room

To add the look of carved wood ornaments to any surface.

To create faux wood panels to simply hang on a wall to mimic the look of carved wood panels.
