Stacked Stone Stencil

Wall design by Becky Shields

Remember when doing any new finish on your walls, to ALWAYS give it a try on a test board (even if it's just a piece of cardboard) before you apply it to the wall. That way, if you want to make any color or technique adjustments, you can do so without having to re-do the wall.

Creating a faux stone or brick wall is really very simple. No matter which of our Raised Plaster Stone or brick stencils you choose to use (see list below), our interesting and easy technique will let you create REAL looking stone with just one swipe of your spatula!

Here's how to do it.

Start in a corner.

Tape the stencil to the wall.

Remove some of the joint compound and place in another container.

Using craft paints in natural colors such as brown, black, rust, green or even gold, squirt a small amount of two different colors in to the container of joint compound.

Mix just enough to create a "swirl" of color. DO NOT mix colors together. You want to see obvious swirls of each color in the compound.

Get some of the mixture on to your spatula then spread in one direction over the top of the stencil. The colors will blend together with the joint compound as you smooth it on.

Don't try to make the compound totally smooth over the stencil. You want those cool ridges, bump and indentations to make the stone look real when it's dry.

Un-tape the stencil and gently pull to one side to remove it.

Allow to dry, then repeat.

To line up the next repeat, you will need to place the edge of the stencil over the top of the dried plaster you just did. Since the stencil will buckle a little, simply tape in place where you can and then press your fingers against the edges of the stencil openings to flatten them next to the dried plaster.

Allow your wall to dry and then use a non-yellowing, clear varnish over the top of your new stone or brick wall.
