You can find Styrofoam rounds at your local
craft store in any number of sizes. I chose a 14" round. 1. Cover
the round with joint compound, by smearing it with a plastic scraper. Try to
get it as smooth as you can. Allow to dry then sand smooth.
2. Apply a
Raised Plaster
Stencil to the round with joint compound. I chose our
Raised Plaster
Norberg Medallion Stencil. The design does not have to be
round in order to be beautiful on a round medallion. Simply play with the
design of your choice over the surface until you create the pattern that
pleases you.
3. Cast a plaster of paris decorative piece (see our molds and how
to), allow it to dry completely then using joint compound on the back as
your adhesive, apply it to the center of the medallion. Let dry, then paint
with white or cream colored wall paint to seal all of the plaster. Let dry.
If you like the looks of a white medallion, you can stop here and
simply hang it on the wall or glue it to the ceiling.

But if you want color:
4. Apply a rust gel stain (or rust colored paint mixed with
translucent wall glaze). Brush over the surface and then wipe off the excess
with an old terry towel. Let it dry.
5. Apply a darker stain and wipe off.
6. Highlight raised areas on the cast plaster center medallion and the
raised stenciled areas.
7. Glue plastic crystals (found at the craft store for around $4.00
per large container) to evenly spaced areas on the medallion.
Any colors you want can be used with this method to coordinate with
existing decor.
Foam rounds can also be purchased that are open in the center so that
you can create a surround for existing light fixtures. The method is the
same no matter what shape of foam you choose.
This method can be used to:
Create ceiling or wall designs that are attached using joint compound.
This gives additional dimension to walls and because you applied them with
joint compound instead of glue, they will be removable down the road.
Create "Wall Art". Simply hot glue a hanger you have fashioned out of
a paper clip to the back.
Create large, over the door designs or large wall art by doing
rectangular or square foam instead of round.
Create unique gifts for friends and family.
