How to create a faux marble finish on anything!

Marbled plaster columns

Marbleizing isn't difficult at all. In fact, it can be a heck of a lot of fun if you just give yourself some time to play before beginning.

There are many ways to create a marble faux finish, but here's a quick and easy technique for those of you who have never done it before.

In our home in the mountains of Northern Idaho, I did cast plaster wall frames with a marble finish on the inside panel.

First, choose your marble colors. I prefer two. One light and one dark. With this project, I chose pale brown and cream.

Step 1 Dot angled patches of the darker color on to the wall.

Step 2 Blend the edges with a sea sponge or old terry towel.

Step 3 Blot the second color angled in the same direction next to and over the top of the first color and blend in the same manner

Step 4 Use either a thin artists brush, fan brush or even a good stiff feather and dip in to brown paint (or much darker version of your darker paint) that has been thinned with water to the consistency of milk.

Use the brush to create squiggled lines (veining) over the surface, again on the same angle as your blotted background. If you use a little artists brush, making these lines is so easy! Simply twist the brush as you drag it at an angle over the surface. Don't worry if it skips or creates blotches as those effects are found naturally in marble graining. So don't try to be perfect!

Step 5Gently blot the vein lines to slightly blur them with your sea sponge.

Varnish your new finish with high gloss, clear, non-yellowing varnish to make it look like shiny, polished marble!

Now, look around your home. What surface is in need of a new treatment to give it new life?
