How to remove a raised plaster design from the wall

The degree of difficulty removing plaster stenciling depends entirely on whether you have painted over the design with wall paint or not.

Firstly, protect the floor from any falling plaster before beginning.

If you have not painted over the raw joint compound (plaster):

Apply a wet sponge to the design and let it soak for a couple of seconds.

Use a metal or plastic scraper and begin scraping the compound off the wall. Re-wet as necessary and continue to scrape until the design has been completely removed.

Once the design is removed, use a clean sponge and water to remove any residue.

If you have painted over the plaster design:

You will need to remove the paint layer first. This typically can be sanded off with a hand sander. (An electric one saves so much time and energy and typically can be purchased for $20.00 or less at your local home/hardware store).

Once the top paint layer has been removed, simply follow the above instructions for removing plaster.
