How to stencil fabric

Stenciling fabric is no more difficult than stenciling walls or furniture. There are simply a few extra things you need to be aware of

#1- If the item you are stenciling will be something you will launder yourself, you will want to pre-wash it using no fabric softeners. If the item (such as a decorator pillow) is something that would be dry cleaned, pre-washing is not necessary.

#2-With items such as a single layer of cloth, clothing item, etc, insert a piece of cardboard or other protective material underneath the fabric (for instance, inside the shirt) so that the paint does not seep to the back side of the garment.

#3. Stencil the design per the stenciling instructions using fabric paints, stencil cream paints or bottled acrylic craft paints.

Allow to dry completely.

It is necessary to heat set ALL stenciled fabric to set the design. To do this, simply use a pressing cloth over the design, and iron for 1 minute on the hottest setting the fabric type can stand.

After care: Once you stencil fabric, in order for the design to stay beautiful for years to come, you should hand wash rather than machine wash. If you do choose to machine wash your item, place it in a lingerie bag and wash on the gentle cycle.

Remember that all of our Raised Plaster Stencil designs can also be used with paint. So do them on the walls in plaster then use the same design to coordinate items such as rugs, pillows, tablecloths and bed sheets or curtains!
