A sign to honor a new home

Finally getting to move to my forest home in the high mountains of northern Idaho was the most awesome thing! I absolutely had to "name" my new palace in the woods and to create a permanent sign to honor this oasis I now call "home".

I decided to call my home "Chateau De L' Amour" (Castle of Love). Why? Because I love it!!!

I started with a square of thick plywood, then primed and painted it with the same exterior green paint I used on the trim of the house.

Though I could have hand painted the lettering (painstakingly, mind you...), I decided to order the custom lettering through R.A. Smith of the Custom Word Art company which made it ultra quick and easy! Just stick and peel up the backing and I was done! Woo Hoo! That was a thrill, let me tell you!

I then added a border of raised stenciling using joint compound to create an ornamental raised design around the edges.

Once the plaster was dry, I painted over it with the same exterior paint as the sign to completely seal it and make it weather proof.

I used gold metallic paint with an artists brush over the raised design to give it some "oompf" and I loved the result.

I added a wire hanger to the back and hung it on a nail outside my back door. It's now a permanent part of my home that I just love! I've also considered doing little signs like this for my family and friends as gifts. Instead of the name of a house, you could do a family name or even the simple word "Welcome". What a cool gift to consider! And really, so much fun to make, with elegant results!

Remember that any of our plaster stencils can also be used with paint!
