Plaster Flagstone Stencil

 (Click Photos to Enlarge)

Flagstone is one of my favorite stones. Near our home in Idaho, it simply falls off the cliffs and lays in sheets on the side of the road just ripe for the pickin'... but go to buy it and it's a small fortune! But with our new Flagstone stencil and this great new and easy technique, it's simple to produce the look of REAL flagstone with the swipe of a plastic scraper!

Consider using it for stone walls in your home, give your fireplace a "flagstone" look, or how about that blank sides on your kitchen island?

Click on the photo to enlarge it and take a look at the superb variation of color within each stone. And it's ultra easy!

Here's how:

Put some joint compound in to a separate container. Add a bit of two different colors (I used black and rust brown for mine). Take your trowel, plastic scraper or a spoon and just "swirl" the colors together to slightly blend. You actually want to see all three colors (the third being the white of the joint compound).

Now, scoop some of this mixture up and smear it over a piece of cardboard or newspaper as a test. This gives you the opportunity to play a little bit with just how you like yours to look. Now, do the same to the stencil.

With this design, allow the joint compound mixture to go in different directions for more realism.  Try NOT to blend the colors too much. Having distinct separation of color makes it totally look real.

Use with concrete and concrete colorings for outdoor applications! This is a technique that can be used on any stone or brick stencil to achieve awesome results!
